In 2012,

Decision was taken by public authorities to expand the existing Hong-Kong Chep Lap Kok airport in order to ensure it had sufficient capacity to manage an ever-growing number of passengers.

Given the geography of the area, a large portion of reclaimed land had to be planned in order to support a third runwayand the necessary infrastructure.

In 2018,

Works started to erect a new 650 ha land extension, north of the existing airport. In order to ensure the settlement process was going as planned, it was decided to install a large number of Geocubes, spread out across the construction site. Despite challenging conditions (accessibility, sea-spray, typhoons, active construction site...) over a thousand Geocubes were installed, all providing continuous, real-time positions to the airport surveyors.

Given the geography of the area, a large portion of reclaimed land had to be planned in order to support a third runwayand the necessary infrastructure.

Over the years, Geocubes were displaced as construction works proceeded and new structures were erected, new points had to be monitored while obsolete positions were covered with asphalt and concrete.

4 years after the project was initiated, over 1.3 billion precise positions have been computed, a figure still increasing by the minute!
